7 Signs You Have Bed Bugs (And What to Do Next)

Up to 50% of people don't react to bed bug bites. Learn the physical evidence to look for — and what to do if you find it.

Many people assume they'd know immediately if they had bed bugs — but up to 50% of people have no visible reaction to bed bug bites at all. By the time bites appear, an infestation may already be well-established. Here are the 7 most reliable signs.

1. Small Rust-Colored Spots on Bedding Bed bugs defecate after feeding, leaving small dark brown or rust-colored spots on mattress seams, sheets, and nearby walls. These are one of the most reliable indicators.

2. Shed Skins (Exoskeletons) Bed bugs molt 5 times as they mature. These translucent, hollow shells are often found in mattress seams, behind headboards, and in furniture joints.

3. Live Bugs Adult bed bugs are apple-seed sized, flat, and reddish-brown. They're most active at night. Check mattress seams, box spring folds, and headboard crevices with a flashlight.

4. Eggs and Eggshells Bed bug eggs are tiny (1mm), white, and sticky. They're often found in clusters in tight crevices.

5. A Sweet, Musty Odor Large infestations produce a distinctive sweet, musty smell from their scent glands. If you notice an unexplained odor in your bedroom, take it seriously.

6. Bite Patterns If you do react to bites, they typically appear in lines or clusters on exposed skin (arms, neck, shoulders). They're often itchy and may have a small blister center.

7. Blood Stains on Sheets Small blood smears on sheets occur when a feeding bed bug is accidentally crushed during sleep.
